Montague Eagles Dominate at Chico Meet; 8th Grade Boys Claim Team Championship

The Montague Eagles and Lady Eagles turned in one of their most impressive performances of the season this week at Chico High School, highlighted by a dominant team championship from the 8th grade boys, who racked up an incredible 134 total points.

Leading the charge for the 8th grade boys was Brazos Jones, who broke the school record in shot put with a massive throw of 39’6”, earning 1st place. Jones also added a 2nd-place finish in discus (85’6”)4th in the 100m (13.69), and 5th in the 200m (28.84) to round out a huge day.

Cason Harris delivered a perfect performance, taking home three gold medals. Harris won the long jump (16’10.5”)110m hurdles (19.64), and 300m hurdles (51.12), showcasing his versatility and dominance across multiple events.

Sprinter Caiden Young also had a standout meet, earning gold in the 200m (25.72)silver in the 100m (12.44), along with 3rd in discus (76’7”) and 4th in long jump (14’9”).

Distance runner Levi Newland continued his incredible season, breaking yet another school record in the triple jump (32’ 8.75”) on his very first attempt, earning silver. He also claimed gold in both the 2400m (8:23.26) and the 1600m (5:18.82), setting a new PR and school record in the 1600m & 2400m.

Aiden Chavez added to the scoring effort with a 2nd-place finish in shot put (33’1”).

The 7th grade boys also contributed strong performances. Hayden Hennessy placed 3rd in shot put (26’4”) and 6th in discus (64’1”)Wade Hughes finished 6th in the 800m (3:45.07), while Alex Chavez placed 5th in the 200m (33.4)Colt Garrett added a 3rd-place finish in the 100m (15.4).

On the girls side, the 8th grade Lady Eagles had an outstanding meet as well. Madison Fomby completed a clean sweep in the throwing events, earning gold in shot put (25’4”) and gold in discus (51’3”). Teammate Lily Gary placed 6th in shot put (21’8”).

Sprinter Jalena Rodriguez brought home two gold medals, winning the 400m (1:09.43) and the 200m (31.15), while also placing 5th in the 100m (14.53).

Joanna Parr set a new school record in the 100m hurdles (20.84), earning 3rd place, and also placed 6th in the 400m (1:20.14).

Distance standout Sage Keck, a 7th grader competing up in the 8th grade division, dominated once again with three 1st-place finishes. Keck won the 2400m (8:38.83)800m (2:30.28), and set a new personal record and school record in the 1600m (5:29.59).

The 7th grade Lady Eagles also had a strong showing. Kenzi McEwen led the group with 1st-place finishes in both the 2400m (10:49.57) and the 1600m (6:48.41).

Kynzlea Rios earned 2nd in the 100m (15.85), while Cayde Harris had a standout meet, taking 1st in discus (56’5”)3rd in shot put (25’4”), and 3rd in the 100m (16.00).

With a huge team victory, multiple school records, and dominant performances across all grade levels, the Montague Eagles and Lady Eagles are peaking at the right time.

The teams will now enjoy a bye week to prepare for their biggest meet of the season—the District Meet on April 7th, which will be held at Forestburg High School.
