Montague hosted Gold-Burg for their season opener Monday night and came away with 2 wins. On the girl's side, Montague came out strong defensively leading to transition layups. Montague was then able to settle into a comfortable lead going into the 2nd quarter and run their offense looking for open shots. Montague shot the ball 53% as a team and stole the ball 32 times leading to a 68-8 victory. 6th grader Paige Davis set the pacing for scoring with 16 points, shooting 55% from the field, also contributing 6 rebounds, 2 blocks and 8 steals. Aubree Kleinhans led the way in assists with 6, also contributing 8 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Chloe Broussard had a team high 9 steals to go with 12 points (86% shooting) and 5 assists. Emma Read also shot 86% from the field to go with 12 points. Other outstanding stats from the game: Ava Johnson and Bayler Smith 6 points each, Tinley Cable 5 points to go with 5 assists and 5 rebounds and Brylie Hager 3 points.

The Eagles begin the year on the heels of a very successful 9-1 season the previous year and have 8 eighth graders on the team this year. In their opening matchup, the Eagles came out with tough defense and were able to hold the Bears to 7 points in the first half. The Eagles picked up their offense in the second quarter and were able to generate 30 points by the end of the half to give them a 30-7 advantage. In the second half, Montague continued their strong performance defensively, and the shots continued to fall as they went on a 19-3 run in the third quarter and closed the game out in the fourth. The Eagles won their home opener by a final score of 56-16 to begin the season 1-0. The leading scorers for the Eagles were Caden Belcher with 17 points and Karson Kleinhans with 13. Other scorers were Brady Moore with 9, Walker Strahan and Josiah Messer with 6 each, and Hunter Parr finished with 5. 

 

Montague will travel to Saint Jo Monday for a 6:00 PM game.
