8th Grade Night Ends with a Win Over Slidell

Montague hosted their annual 8th grade night for athletes before their last home game vs. Slidell on February 6th. It was a great night for the Lady Eagles as they avenged an earlier loss in the season that saw their leading scorer foul out of the game early in the 3rd quarter. The Lady Eagles lead 7-6 at the end of the 1st quarter but then went on a shooting spree the 2nd and 3rd quarter to finish up the win 46-21 with 2 players having double doubles. Paige Davis scored 25 points to go with 14 rebounds and 3 assists, while Emma Read scored 10 points, had 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. 6th grader Maddyn Bowles got in on the action with 6 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals, sister Raylea Bowles scored 5 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and led the team in steals with 4. 6th grade Avery Reed grabbed 4 rebounds. 

The boys were not as fortunate as they lost to Slidell 22-62. Brooks Gray scored 9 points, Cooper Johnson 8, Ryan Newman 3 and Lane Smith 2 points.

Montague will graduate 10 athletes:

Gentry Gray is the daughter of Jerry and Shannon Gray of Montague and will attend Bowie High School.

Brooks Gray is son of Jerry and Shannon Gray of Montague and will attend Bowie High School.

Lily Hamilton is the daughter of Nathan and Natalie Hamilton of Bowie and will attend Bowie High School.

Emma Read is the daughter of Michael Read of Bowie and Darla Read of Bowie and will attend Bowie High School.

Macklyn Pittman is the daughter of Dustin Pittman of Nocona and Charlie Hamilton of Montague and will attend Nocona High School.

Raylea Bowles is the daughter of Toby and Terah Bowles of Nocona and will attend Nocona High School.

Laura Hudson is the daughter of Scott and Stacy Hudson of Montague and will attend Saint Jo High School.

Brayden Croxton is the son of Travis and Michelle Croxton of Montague and will attend Nocona High School.

Chaz Cunningham is the son of Lance Cunningham of Bowie and Shelley Walker of Montague and will attend Nocona High School.

Avaree Woodyard is the daughter of  Jason and Darci Woodyard of Nocona and will attend Nocona High School.

This group of girls have had an amazing run while at Montague. In basketball they have a total 3 year record of 37 wins and 5 losses. including 2 undefeated district seasons. They have been the champions at 1 Nocona Tournament, got 3rd there this year, and won 1 Cooke County Shootout Tournament while being runners up another year and because of covid didn’t get to do tournaments their 6th grade year. In volleyball they have almost the same total record as basketball with 38 wins and 5 losses with 1 undefeated regular season last year. They  won 1 Bowie Tournament, won the consolation another year while winning the consolation championship at the Windthorst tournament this year.

On the boy’s side, for the last 3 years in football they have a total record of 9-10. In basketball they have a district record of 18-9 including an undefeated district season last year. They also won the Cooke County Shootout Tournament last year.
