Over the past few weeks, the Montague Eagles have delivered standout performances across cross country, football, and volleyball, with athletes continuing to showcase growth, grit, and Eagle pride.
The Eagles boys’ cross country team placed 7th overall out of 14 teams in their latest meet at Midway. Levi Newland led the way, capturing 1st place with a time of 11:56. He was followed by Caiden Young, 28th (14:10); Cason Harris, 50th (15:25); Aiden Chavez, 62nd (15:55); and Cutter Garrett, 73rd (16:13). Rounding out the lineup were Jerry Bonilla, 80th (16:26); Brazos Jones, 90th (16:56); Colt Garrett, 114th (18:34); and Kyler Fomby, 123rd (19:49) among 140 runners.
On the girls’ side, Sage Keck took 3rd place in 12:36. Kenzi McEwen placed 27th (15:52), while Joanna Parr finished 108th (22:20); Courtney Bobbitt, 113th (22:51); and Madison Fomby, 125th (26:19) in a field of 126 runners.
At an earlier meet in Lindsay, the team battled heavy mud conditions. Newland earned a 2nd-place finish (12:09), followed by Young in 19th (13:47) and Harris in 33rd (14:27). Bonilla (47th, 15:21), Chavez (64th, 15:53), Jones (75th, 16:25), Alex Chavez (92nd, 18:10), and Fomby (99th, 19:19) rounded out the boys’ results. For the girls, Keck once again secured 3rd place (12:49), with McEwen (20th, 15:31), Parr (57th, 18:26), Bobbitt (97th, 20:05), and Fomby (119th, 24:17) following.
The Eagles’ football squad turned in two thrilling performances. Against Prairie Valley, Montague rolled to a 63-7 victory, powered by a career night from Cason Harris, who scored seven total touchdowns — four rushing, one receiving, and two on defense via fumble returns. Quarterback Brazos Jones added a rushing and a passing touchdown, while Caiden Young had a pick-six as the defense stifled Prairie Valley to a single score.
The following week, Montague battled Saint Jo to a dramatic 47-47 tie in an offensive shootout. Harris again led the charge with six rushing touchdowns, while Jones added a rushing score and converted key extra points. Defensively, Chavez and Young each tallied eight tackles to help secure the hard-fought draw.
The Eagles now sit at 2-0-1, riding momentum into their next matchup.
The Lady Eagles volleyball team also found success, traveling to Gold-Burg and winning convincingly in two sets, 25-12 and 25-9. Top performances included:

JoAnna Parr: 4 kills
Lily Gray: 7 assists
The team’s strong serving, defense, and balanced offense led to the sweep victory.

The Montague Lady Eagles battled through a long day of volleyball on Saturday, capturing the consolation championship at the Windthorst Tournament. With 7 of their 10 players in 6th or 7th grade, the Lady Eagles competed in the 7th-grade division against much larger schools.
The tournament began bright and early with an 8:00 a.m. matchup against Henrietta. Montague pushed the contest to three sets before falling in a thriller, 19-25, 25-20, 11-15. After the tough loss, the Lady Eagles bounced back and caught fire, winning their next three matches. They topped Archer City in another three-set battle (26-28, 25-16, 15-7), defeated Harold in straight sets (25-18, 25-9), and capped off the day by securing the consolation championship with a strong performance against Breckenridge, 25-13, 25-18.
Stat leaders played a huge role in Montague’s run. Lily Gray was dominant at the service line with 22 aces on 90% serving, while Sage Keck added 9 aces at a 93% clip. Keck anchored the defense with an incredible 78 digs—nearly 20 per match—while Gray contributed 27 digs of her own. At the net, JoAnna Parr powered the offense with 27 kills, supported by Cayde Harris with 10 kills and Madison Fomby with 9. Gray also kept the attack flowing with 29 assists.
The Lady Eagles will return to action Thursday, October 2, when the White Team travels to Gold-Burg for a 4:30 p.m. matchup.
The Lady Eagles hosted Christ Academy for their final home game of the year. While Montague was not able to pull out a win, the growth since their first matchup with the Lady Warriors was remarkable.
The Blue team took the court first, falling 11–25, 21–25. In their earlier meeting, Montague only managed 20 points combined across two sets—this time they nearly doubled that total in one match.
Next up, the White team battled hard in two tight sets, dropping both 19–25, 19–25. Back in their first meeting, Montague had only scored 25 points overall, making this effort a significant improvement.

The Lady Eagles hosted Prairie Valley this week in junior high volleyball action. The Blue team started strong, downing PV 15-12, 15-11, before the White team fell in a hard-fought battle 25-13, 20-25, 10-15.

Meanwhile, the Montague cross country team turned in another strong showing this week with standout efforts from both the boys and girls squads.

Sage Keck highlighted the girls’ race, finishing 2nd overall with a time of 11:59.
Kenzi McEwen followed at 14:38, while Presley Gonzales (19:15), Courtney Bobbitt (21:21), and Madison Fomby (24:00) all contributed to the team’s scoring.
The meet showcased both experienced leaders and emerging runner and the team looks forward to building on this momentum as the season progresses.
On the football field, the Eagles “45ed” Prairie Valley in a dominant performance, taking control from the very beginning. The game was hosted at Gold-Burg, and a huge thank you goes out to them for allowing us to use their field. A full article recap will be coming soon.
The Montague Lady Eagles made their mark this past weekend at the Bowie Tournament, competing in the 7th grade division with grit and determination. The Lady Eagles started their morning facing a tough opponent in Holliday, who went on to win the entire tournament. Despite a strong effort, Montague fell 16–25, 12–25. Refusing to stay down, the Lady Eagles bounced back against Millsap in a hard-fought matchup, pulling out a thrilling 25–22, 25–26 win. The momentum carried into the consolation championship, where Montague outlasted Bridgeport in a three-set showdown: 25–9, 18–25, 15–4.
The day was filled with standout performances:
Aces: Lily Gray led with 10.
Serving: Sage Keck had the best serving percentage at 93%, adding 5 aces.
Digs: Keck recorded 16 while Gracie Jones chipped in 12.
Kills: JoAnna Parr was unstoppable at the net with 20, followed by Jones with 7 and Cayden Harris with 6.
Assists: Gray dished out 18 to lead the way.
The Lady Eagles will host Prairie Valley for more volleyball action Thursday the 25th beginning with the Blue team at 4:00.
Meanwhile, Montague football also made a powerful statement in their season opener, storming to a decisive victory at half-time by 45 points over Saint Mary's in Gainesville. Levi Newland set the tone early, finding the end zone twice on offense and later electrifying the crowd with a pick-six touchdown on defense. His two-way dominance fueled momentum for the Eagles. Cason Harris powered the running game, racking up four rushing touchdowns. He wasn’t done there—Harris also added four extra point conversions, proving to be a reliable finisher for Montague. The defense came up big again when Caiden Young jumped a route and returned an interception for another pick-six, stretching Montague’s lead and keeping their opponents off balance. Quarterback Brazos Jones showcased his arm with two passing touchdowns, spreading the field and keeping the defense guessing. He also contributed on special teams, notching an extra point conversion to cap off his all-around effort. From start to finish, the Eagles controlled the game with a mix of offensive firepower and defensive grit. With multiple players making highlight-worthy plays, Montague looks poised for an exciting season ahead. They will play Prairie Valley at Gold-Burg next Thursday, September 25th.
Both volleyball and football programs are off to inspiring starts, giving Eagle fans plenty to cheer about as the year unfolds.
